The Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong holds the biggest festival of lights in Korea and the impressive display of 30,000 lights makes for a perfect chilly winter outing.

The garden contains around 5,000 different plants with a network of scenic walkways that, when lit up, create a magical winter wonderland. Enjoy a romantic stroll among the lights and warm up with some coffee or hot chocolate at the little coffee shop. Tickets cost ₩8000 (around $7), the lights are turned on at 18:00 and the garden closes at 20:30.

When to go?

The Light Festival runs from December to March but the garden itself is open all year round so be sure to check it out during the warmer months when the flowers are in bloom.

How to get there?

The easiest way to get to Cheongpyeong from Seoul is by subway (Gyeonchun line), Exit 1. From the station, you can either take a taxi directly to the Garden of Morning Calm (around ₩15,000, or $13) or take a bus from the Cheongpyeong bus terminal (₩5,000, or around $4).

What else is there to do in Gapyeong?

During the winter months there are numerous ice festivals held on the frozen rivers in and around Gapyeong that host various activities such as fishing and ice sledding.

Visit Cheongpyeong Lake or stroll through the pretty peaceful buildings of Petite France, a theme park reminiscent of a village in Southeast France park overlooking the lake.
