Our Answer to Cecile’s Questions
How did you decide to become a travel blogger?
Teaching in South Korea we have received countless questions from friends and family about how we do it and what our lives here are like. So, one day we just decided that starting a blog would be a great way to keep them all in the loop. We also thought it would be a great way to document our time here so we could look back years from now and have something to remember it by. It really just started out as a small project to keep us busy and share our experiences with friends and family. However, we slowly started realizing that we could help inspire other people to break away from their ordinary lives and do something challenging, simply by sharing how we did it.
Where’s your favorite place in the world (so far)?
Our favorite place that we have traveled to together has to be Sabah Borneo, Malaysia. The combination of jungle, wildlife, gorgeous white sandy beaches, and the most incredible diving we have ever experienced made it an all-round hit for us and absolute paradise.
What’s the best food you’ve ever eaten and where did you eat it?
This would have to be Malaysian food. All of it! We loved the variety of Indian, Chinese and Malay dishes to choose from. Our love of spice was definitely catered for in this culinary heaven.
What’s the most incredible thing you’ve done while travelling?
This would definitely be a toss-up between seeing Orangutan’s in the wild on a river safari in Malaysian Borneo, and the mind blowing diving on Sipadan Island. Seeing Orangutan’s in the wild has been something we have both dreamed about since as long as we can remember so it was a very special moment. Diving Sipadan’s dive sites was the most exhilarating experience. The amount of marine life was almost overwhelming to the senses and we were completely speechless for days afterwards.
Who would you choose as your travel companion, if you could pick absolutely anyone (dead or alive, real or fictional character)?
(Hayley) Definitely Bear Grylls. We are most happy out in nature and Bear Grills would make any experience out in nature completely thrilling and challenging in all the best ways. We would probably swear a lot but love every second of it :)
(Steven) For me, it has to be anyone in my family. They understand me best and every time I travel, I wish they could be sharing the experience with me.
Who would you say inspires you the most (in your travels or life in general)?
There are a number of people that inspire us but David Attenborough is our clear favorite. He is an incredibly humble man who is passionate about the environment. He not only has an extensive knowledge but is always learning and discovering more. A true inspiration.
What’s your favourite travel quote?
Hayley: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”- Marcel Droust
Travelling continually changes and shifts the way you see the world. It opens your eyes and gives you a completely new perspective. That is why I love travelling, because of how much I grow and learn along the way.
Steven: “Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the road less travelled by.” – Robert Frost
I prefer to see the less popular and unexpected places. Dare to be different and love the unique, less documented things about travel. When people enjoy the views of the beaches, I prefer to discover the thickness of the jungle. Everything that mankind has touched less of, or has not been shaped to benefit us.
Name 3 items that you cannot travel without (passport doesn’t count!)?
Hayley: My ipod (for those long hours on buses, planes, trains, etc.), a great book and a strong pair of slops (aka flip flops or thongs).
Steven: A cap, shorts and a pair of shoes. Everything else, I can do without. Well a camera now that we have our blog and YouTube channel.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give to someone who wants to become a travel blogger?
Write about what interests you. Being passionate about what you write about will not only make it more enjoyable but will probably result in much better content. Write whenever you feel like it and don’t put yourself under pressure to post too regularly. Although the more consistent you are the more chance you have of being discovered and being followed by a loyal audience, always remember that you want to love what you are doing and not feel like you have to do something you aren’t excited or motivated to do. In short, just aim to enjoy the experience and the rest will follow.
Apart from travelling (and blogging about it), what is your biggest passion?
As two teachers that’s an easy answer. Education is something we are both very passionate about. Of course, we feel that the world is one big classroom and travelling is the best education. Not only do you learn about the world but you learn so much about yourself too.
What’s your next destination?
Hopefully we will be heading to Palawan, Philippines during our winter vacation in January.
