Themed Café’s in Hongdae, Seoul

While sipping on a cappuccino in a cozy Café is always enjoyable, Korea has found a way to spice things up with some weird and wonderful café themes. These quaint, and often bizarre, little twists make what is usually quite an ordinary experience into something unique and memorable. There are numerous themed cafes dotted across the country so for practical purposes we chose three to visit in the Hongdae area.

Hello Kitty Café

This Japanese cartoon cat is so popular that a whole café has been dedicated to it. While we still don’t really understand what the fuss is about, it’s definitely the cutest place to enjoy a beverage in Seoul.

The café certainly lives up to its name and has Hello Kitty on everything. From the napkins to the toilet seats (yes, the toilet seats). The café offers various Hello Kitty desserts and even has Hello Kitty latte art. If pink is your favorite color then this café will be your haven. For all those die-hard fans, there is also a gift shop where you can purchase all Hello Kitty goodies.

First Class Café

While most of us have been on a plane before, how many of us can say we’ve flown first class? Well we can now all experience first class luxuries for a fraction of the price at this airline themed Café.

For just 7000 won ($6), “passengers” are given a boarding pass to a semi-private cabin equipped with First Class massage chairs. Here you can enjoy a 15 minute full body massage before being served your “in-flight meal” of waffles and a beverage of your choice. This café certainly takes the tiresome aspect out of travel, would be nice if you arrived at a destination though.

Bau House Café

For dog lovers Bau House is absolute heaven. Coffee and puppies, could there be any better combination in the world. We definitely don’t think so!

There is no entrance fee to this doggie den, simply buy a drink (5000-10,000 won, $4-8) and bring plenty of love to go around. The café is home to about 20 dogs that you can play with, their names and a brief description are provided so you can find out what breed and how old they are. The café also functions as a dog hotel and visitors are allowed to bring their own dogs so there are plenty of pooches to go around. The café is surprisingly clean and the dogs extremely friendly and well cared for. As for the coffee, well we were a little preoccupied with our new furry friends to pay any attention to the coffee.

How to get there: Subway Hapyeong Station, Line 2, Exit 3. Outside exit 3 turn around, take a left and Bau House will be on your right.

Address: Seoul, Mapo-gu, Seogyo-dong, Yanghwa-ro, 64 제일빌딩
